Location: Mildred Lake Site – Fort McMurray, AB
GFL Environmental is looking for a technically-minded and experienced Operations Supervisor to join our team at the Mildred Lake site. This critical role focuses on the complex management of sulfur transportation and handling.
The Operations Supervisor will be responsible for developing a thorough understanding of the site’s unique sulfur haulage requirements and patterns. You will review day-to-day operations, evaluate specialized equipment needs, and schedule service lines to maintain a cost-effective balance between customer service and operational efficiency. A niche understanding of sulfur processing and safety is beneficial to this role.

Key Responsibilities:
Specialized Oversight: Oversee and optimize day-to-day sulfur transportation and service planning at the Mildred Lake facility.
Process Integrity: Monitor cost-effective operations while prioritizing the specific safety protocols required for elemental or liquid sulfur handling.
Coordination: Communicate and coordinate with dispatch, specialized drivers, and site partners for efficient scheduling and delivery.
Compliance & Safety: Conduct regular driver performance reviews and organize training to ensure compliance with safety standards and high-hazard material handling.
Incident Management: Investigate and manage accidents/incidents, ensuring timely reporting and resolution within the unique regulatory framework of the oil sands.
Leadership: Provide support to product line personnel, including recruitment and performance management for a specialized workforce.
Requirements:
Niche Knowledge: Proven experience or a deep technical understanding of sulfur handling, including its physical properties and specialized transportation risk is an asset.
Experience: 3–5 years of supervisory experience, specifically within the oil sands, heavy industrial, or hazardous waste sectors.
Local Commitment: Willingness and ability to work on-site at Mildred Lake (Fort McMurray).
Licensing: Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Regulations: Strong familiarity with WHMIS, TDG (Transportation of Dangerous Goods), the Highway Traffic Act, and OHS safety regulations.
Tech Savvy: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite for managing logistics data and site reports.
Skills and Abilities:
Specialized Safety: A proactive approach to preventing accidents involving hazardous chemicals and specialized haulage equipment.
Critical Thinking: Ability to prioritize tasks and meet tight deadlines in a high-stakes industrial environment.
Interpersonal Skills: Strong communication skills to liaise between site management and specialized field operators.
Incident Investigation: Skilled in investigating industrial incidents and preparing rigorous documentation.
