Laboratory Manager

Key Responsibilities:
•    Assign and direct the work of the laboratory.
•    Monitor laboratory supplies and direct re-supply requests through the assigned internal purchasing personnel.
•    Update status of job processes in the internal database.
•    Identifies and recommends improvements to processes and to procedures.
•    Trouble shoot issues with the laboratory instrumentation.
•    Complete documentation associated with the applicable provincial and federal regulations and legislation.
•    Govern the control of and declarations related to incoming and outgoing waste.
•    Assist with discrepancies of incoming and outgoing materials.
•    Review analytical reports and ensure that outgoing materials meet disposal site parameters.
•    Prepare reports summarizing laboratory work volumes and results.
•    Ensure the department maintains established controls, procedures and accountability to manage safety, environment and regulatory compliance.
•    Provide training to new employees.
•    Act as coach/mentor to develop staff technical knowledge and capabilities.
•    Assist with staff discipline, training and performance evaluation.
•    Monitor and maintain staff training records.
•    Report analytical results and coordinate with production personnel.
•    Assist with the classification of waste materials.
•    Supervise general laboratory housekeeping duties.
•    Complete certificates of disposal and summaries of analyses as required.
•    Ensure that relevant information is communicated to all departments, enabling them to effectively carry out their functions and work together to achieve goals.
•    Performs additional duties as assigned by Manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:
•    5+ year of progressive relevant laboratory experience (experience and understanding of industrial and liquid waste industry preferred) including a minimum of 2 years in a management role.
•    Degree in chemistry (advanced degree preferred).
•    Extensive knowledge about analytical instrumentation (experience with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy would be an asset).
•    Effective interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal.
•    Possess superior organizational and people management skills.
•    Flexible to work extended hours.
•    Emergency response availability including evenings and weekends.
•    Proficient computer skills that must include Microsoft Office suite.
•    Must be able to utilize required personal protective equipment (hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, respirators, safety footwear).
•    Able to work outdoors, exposed to the ambient weather conditions.
