Field Technician/Chemist
Summary
The Field Technician/Chemist (FT) position with GFL Liquid West is responsible for providing on-site services and technical assistance for all aspects of hazardous waste management. The role is to respond to customer enquiries, assist sales with inventory and on-site classification of hazardous waste, record and schedule waste projects and subsequent shipments into various disposal facilities, provide support in relation to invoicing questions SDS acquisition/review, completion of safety paperwork & TDG documentation and waste classification & labelling. This position provides a critical role in achieving our customer satisfaction targets (both internal and external), as well as maintaining a high level of technical and field service to our customers.
This is a regular full-time position based in Surrey. The regular working hours are Monday through Friday. However, hours of work can change based on the operational needs of the business. There will also be occasional overnight stays due to the travelling that is required for this position.
Job Duties
Evaluate customer needs and communicate back to the Sales or Technical team.
Conduct field level assessment in respond to customer or sales enquires.
Select and utilize appropriate PPE for the task at hand.
Perform field sample / identification on waste to determine transport, packaging, and disposal requirements.
Ensure waste is classified and disposed of in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Perform lab packing on small containers according to proper waste packaging protocols.
Complete all manifest / TDG paperwork to accompany the waste pick up.
Complete and submit Daily Toolboxes, FLHA’s and Near Misses/Haz ID’s.
Participate and contribute to GFL’s Safety Program.
Supervision of project work and ensure all activities adhere to GFL’s safety program.
Provide field collection and support when required.
Involved with execution of chemical and petroleum transfers.
Participation in projects that are deemed out of scope or require more planning and preparation.
Active participant in all Incident and Emergency Response work as required.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Post-secondary education in environmental sciences, chemistry, or equivalent is required.
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and a fairly clean Commercial Drivers Abstract is required.
Use of Air Purifying respirator (APR) requires individual to be clean shaven.
Knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) is preferred.
Prior experience in hazardous waste industry or related field would be a definite asset.
Technical knowledge in lab packing, unknown identification and hazard assessments is highly desirable.
Working knowledge in BC Hazardous Waste Regulation and WHMIS is an asset.
Strong proficiency in computer and mobile device operation, including effective utilization of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Windows, and other software applications.
