Class 1 Driver Tractor Trailer

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a tractor-trailer and onboard hydraulic systems to collect and transport solid waste and/or recyclables along designated routes.

  • Secure all loads by ensuring tarps are properly closed and no loose material is visible prior to transport.

  • Fully empty trailers at disposal sites and report trailer number and net weight to Customer Service Representatives (CSR) after each dump.

  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections, daily vehicle reports, route sheets, and all other required documentation.

  • Immediately report mechanical issues, accidents, or incidents to supervisors and maintenance personnel.

  • Maintain assigned route quality standards and collaborate with supervisors to improve routing efficiency.

  • Operate vehicles and equipment using approved techniques to minimize mechanical wear and prevent driver-induced damage.

  • Adhere to all safety standards, equipment checks, and regulatory requirements at the federal, state/provincial, local, and company levels.

  • Maintain a clean and professional vehicle appearance, including both interior and exterior.

  • Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.

  • Maintain accurate records of services performed.

  • Demonstrate professionalism when interacting with customers, the public, and coworkers.

  • Attend safety meetings, branch meetings, and training sessions as required.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management, including overtime when necessary.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of commercial driving experience or completion of an accredited CDL training program.

  • Ability to meet all company requirements for safety-sensitive positions.

  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate a tractor-trailer and related equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of tractor-trailer components and basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.

  • Proficient in maneuvering large vehicles in tight spaces and backing distances of 120 feet or more using mirrors.

  • Knowledge of air brake systems and the ability to operate vehicles weighing up to 80,000 pounds (40 tons).

  • Ability to identify unacceptable or hazardous waste materials.

  • Strong communication skills with internal teams and external customers.

  • Ability to read, write, and understand route maps, safety documents, and operational instructions.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and adapt to changing work conditions.

  • Commitment to safety, continuous improvement, and company policies.

  • Ability to repeatedly lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds using proper techniques.

  • Ability to coordinate physical movements while seated or standing.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, and use hands and fingers.

  • Visual acuity requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, with the ability to adjust focus.

  • Ability to regularly lift up to 10 pounds, frequently lift up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Sitting required approximately 75% of the time due to driving responsibilities.

  • Ability to work in loud environments.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent exposure to loud noise, vibration, moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and hazardous materials.

  • Work performed outdoors up to 100% of the time in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.

  • Continuous operation in motor vehicle traffic throughout the workday.

  • Occasional work in elevated or precarious locations.

  • Route-based work performed away from the branch location for most of the day.
