Position Summary

The Commercial Front Load Driver is responsible for safely operating front load and ancillary collection equipment to service commercial customers along assigned routes. This role requires strong safety awareness, equipment knowledge, and professionalism while interacting with customers and representing GFL in the community.

Key Responsibilities

Route & Equipment Operations

  • Operate commercial front load collection vehicles and ancillary equipment to collect solid waste and transport it to designated post-collection facilities

  • Access customer containers by opening enclosures or gates and positioning 3–4 yard containers for dumping as needed

  • Maneuver vehicles in tight spaces using mirrors to back into minimum-clearance areas

  • Use route maps, GPS, and key maps to locate service addresses

Safety & Compliance

  • Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections and complete vehicle condition reports

  • Maintain logbooks, route sheets, productivity reports, and required documentation in compliance with company policy and regulatory requirements

  • Follow all federal, state, local, and company safety rules, including lock-out/tag-out procedures

  • Monitor dumping operations to detect loose debris and visually inspect customer sites before and after service

  • Immediately report accidents, incidents, mechanical issues, or safety concerns to supervision

Customer Service & Site Maintenance

  • Interact courteously and professionally with customers and the public

  • Clean loose debris from truck, containers, and surrounding areas to maintain safe, clean service sites

  • Notify supervisors of customer concerns or issues requiring management attention

  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required

  • Minimum 1 year of commercial truck driving experience or completion of a CDL training program

  • Ability to meet safety-sensitive job requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate collection vehicles and equipment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of collection vehicles and basic maintenance requirements

  • Ability to maneuver large vehicles in confined spaces and high-traffic environments

  • Ability to recognize unacceptable or hazardous waste materials

  • Strong communication skills with customers and internal teams

  • Ability to read, write, and understand route documents, maps, and instructions

  • Flexibility to adapt to changing routes and schedules

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 lbs repetitively using proper lifting techniques

  • Commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement

Physical & Working Conditions

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, and use hands and fingers

  • Ability to enter and exit the truck multiple times per shift and climb onto the truck to verify secure loads

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs regularly, 50 lbs frequently, and up to 100 lbs occasionally; push/move up to 300 lbs as needed

  • Sitting required up to 75% of the workday due to driving

  • Work performed outdoors up to 100% of the time

  • Frequent exposure to loud noise, traffic, weather conditions, vibration, fumes, chemicals, and moving mechanical parts
