Position Overview
GFL Environmental is one of North America’s leading waste management companies, proudly making communities cleaner, safer, and happier through first-class service.
We are looking for an experienced Residential Automated Side Load (ASL) Driver who knows the waste industry, takes pride in driving top-tier equipment, and loves running efficient residential routes. As an ASL driver, you’ll enjoy the independence of solo operation paired with the reliability of modern hydraulic joystick systems and structured, local day routes that get you home safe every evening.
Key Responsibilities
- Route Execution: Safely operate a fully automated side-loading truck and hydraulic arm system to perform curbside collections on assigned residential routes.
- Solo Efficiency: Work independently with minimal in-field supervision while maintaining route quality and efficiency standards.
- Vehicle Maintenance & Safety: Perform thorough daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections. Keep cab interiors and exteriors clean, and promptly report any mechanical issues to mechanics and supervisors.
- Compliance & Safety: Rigorously follow all local, state/provincial, federal (DOT), and company safety regulations, rules, and procedures.
- Customer & Team Relations: Maintain positive, professional interactions with residential customers and collaborate closely with supervisors to optimize routing efficiencies.
- Documentation & Meetings: Accurately complete daily route sheets, logs, and service records. Attend scheduled branch and safety meetings.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Licensing: Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) — Class A or Class B.
- Waste & ASL Experience: 2+ years of commercial driving experience (waste management experience, specifically operating automated side-loaders, strongly preferred). CDL school certificate accepted.
- Technical Skill: Proven ability to safely maneuver a heavy commercial vehicle in tight residential neighborhoods, cul-de-sacs, and clearance-restricted spaces (including backing 120+ feet using mirrors).
- Physical Capability: Ability to sit for extended periods (approx. 75% of the shift), maneuver hydraulic controls, and occasionally lift/carry up to 50 lbs repetitively when manual adjustments or cleanup are needed.
- Waste Awareness: Ability to identify and reject non-acceptable waste materials (e.g., hazardous or flammable materials).
- Safety First Mindset: Strong record of safety compliance and ability to meet all company safety-sensitive role criteria.
