About the Role

As the Area Fleet Director, you’ll play a key leadership role in ensuring GFL Environmental’s fleet operations run safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively. You will oversee the performance, maintenance, and optimization of vehicles and equipment across the region, ensuring our service commitments are met at the lowest cost consistent with sound operating practices, compliance standards, and safety excellence.

This position offers the opportunity to influence fleet strategy, drive operational improvements, and collaborate closely with corporate and regional leadership to support GFL’s continued growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in the evaluation and selection of equipment for use within GFL Environmental, ensuring operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

  • Evaluate, set, and modify fleet maintenance, productivity, fuel, and operational standards to drive efficient fleet performance.

  • Review reports related to aging analysis, utilization, asset lists, and fleet statistics, providing timely insights to leadership.

  • Partner with the VP of Maintenance to evaluate equipment replacements or recommend additional assets to meet service commitments.

  • Facilitate acceptance of newly purchased equipment into the fleet and coordinate redistribution or sale of surplus assets and containers (roll-offs).

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including EPA and DOT requirements.

  • Oversee facilities responsible for repairing, servicing, and supporting the collection fleet, maintaining a strong focus on safety and environmental standards.

  • Ensure consistent application of vehicle operation, maintenance, and safety policies across all business units.

  • Support due diligence inspections for acquisition activities.

  • Verify that established corporate vendor accounts for fleet repair, maintenance, and operations are being effectively utilized.

  • Provide technical guidance in:

    • Equipment selection, performance, and operating cost optimization

    • Budget development and cost control

    • Warranty repairs and negotiations

    • Rebuild vs. replace decision-making

    • Sustainability initiatives and alternative equipment strategies

    • Maintenance team selection, training, and evaluation

    • Accident prevention and safe work practices

    • Site and facility improvements

  • Coordinate with regional management to ensure safety lane procedures are consistently implemented.

  • Maintain full compliance with all federal, provincial, and local regulations, as well as company policies and directives.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Two (2) or four (4) year degree in Business, Engineering, or a related discipline (preferred).

  • Minimum of five (5) years of strong leadership experience in fleet management and maintenance operations.

  • Previous experience in the waste management industry is preferred.

  • Strong analytical and technical skills with the ability to assess equipment performance and costs.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and familiarity with M5 maintenance systems.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present to senior leadership.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence and foster cross-functional collaboration.

Physical & Working Conditions

  • Ability to stand, walk, use hands, reach, stoop, talk, hear, and climb as required.

  • Must be able to regularly lift/move up to 15 lbs, and occasionally up to 30 lbs.

  • Approximately 50% of work performed in an office environment, with regular travel required to regional sites.

  • Moderate noise levels typical of operational or shop environments.
